#lake chelan vacation rentals
Lake Chelan is a narrow, 50-mile-long lake in Chelan County in the northern part of Washington state. The name Chelan is a Salish Indian word that can mean both lake and blue water .
Fed by streams from the Cascade Range, Lake Chelan has maximum depth of 1,486 feet making it the third deepest lake in the country and the ninth deepest in the world. The surface of the lake is 1,098 feet above sea level, while the average width of the lake is one mile.
The city of Chelan sits at the southeast tip of the lake, where its water flows into the Chelan River through the hydroelectric Lake Chelan Dam. At the northwest end of the lake is the town of Stehekin. Access to the far end of the lake is limited to boat, float plane, or hiking. Lake Chelan State Park lies along the southern shore of the lake, and can be accessed from the city of Chelan by road. The northern portion of the lake is protected by Lake Chelan National Recreation Area.
Lake Chelan is all about FUN! Whether you like high adventure, leisure sports or playing around with the kids, there is something for everyone.
Boating is always the rage as there are two major spots ideal for boating. The upper basin called the Lucerne Basin. is where this pristine body of water plunges to depths of 1,500 feet. 400 feet below sea level. Except for the occasional recreational boater, the upper basin is where the lake becomes a highway. a highway to the 15 overnight Forest Service and National Park Service boat-in campgrounds scattered along the shoreline all the way to the small community of Stehekin at the head of the lake.
The lower basin is where most people do their boating and relaxing on Lake Chelan. The boat and personal water craft traffic creates a lot of chop, which is great fun for the tuber and personal water craft user, but not necessarily what the water skier wants. Serious water skiers come to Lake Chelan in the summer, but the best time of day to ski is early. very early in the morning before all the other water craft users are up and around and the lake is nice and flat.
Many places around the lake lend themselves to hiking, fishing, golfing, horse back riding and hang gliding. As well as Summer, Winter boasts such activities as snowmobiling and skiing. And you can’t forget our exquisite wineries around the Chelan Valley.
